WRITING BLOG

Themes and things you can expect from my writing, regardless of genre

As many of you who have followed this blog for a while may know, I write in multiple genres. I write fantasy, fiction, children’s books, poetry, romance, and even some horror. I enjoy writing in various genres, because it allows me to always be working on something, even when different aspects of life change my mood or the way I feel about things. It also allows me to express and incorporate the various genres that I enjoy reading.

No matter what genre I write, there are some common themes and concepts that I always love to explore and weave into the fabric of work my words create. Today, I wanted to share some of these with you, as well as why I enjoy working with these elements.

Light & Darkness
No matter the genre, I like to incorporate elements of light and darkness and how they connect with us as human beings and reflect our emotions and personal experiences. I particularly enjoy incorporating this into my fantasy works, but it can be easily spotted in my poetry, my romance, or even my children’s books (there’s a part in Especially You where the little owl gets lost in the forest after the sun goes down, and he feels alone and frightened).

Truly, I believe that writing  and stories in general are a wonderful reflection of the human experience, which is made deeper, more meaningful, and more beautiful when elements of light and darkness are explored. We can never truly appreciate the light without the darkness, and the darkness in and of itself is something that deserves understanding.

Deep Personal Ordeals
Crucible moments, gut wrenching decisions, conflicting desires. Again, these sorts of things make life, and stories, deeper and more interesting.

Reluctant hero
Whether the hero wants adventure or not, I find that the most satisfying stories come from characters who didn’t want the responsibility of being a hero in the first place, but rose up to accept it, and thrive to a level they never imagined because of it.

Perseverance and determination
I write characters that are strong willed, determined to get what they want, and persevere - though not without changing - through all the challenges the world around throws their way.

Complex Relationships
I like to write characters that have complicated or complex relationships with the people around them, whose personalities, interests, and personal challenges form through these multifaceted relationships.

Fate vs Free Will
Are we destined for greatness? Do things happen for a reason or by chance? Are we in control of our choices and actions, or are we merely puppets under someone else’s control?

In most of my works, I like to challenge my characters with these debates and notions, often having my characters decide for themselves what they think is right. I like to tie in little details throughout the story that may hint to something greater at play, but try to allow my characters room to wrestle with the concepts on their own.

What kinds of themes and things do you like to incorporate in your writing? Let me know, and check back next week for more writing related content. :)
